School Supplies: 2D
Apologies in advance, but for this course, one of the reasons we price so low is for you to get materials. They’re not inexpensive but they will last for years, and open a world of art that no other method can match.
I learned both the art and science of both digital and analog materials, but I don’t think everyone needs to take that step. There may even be advantages to learning digital process on it’s own.
The argument against this is that much of the software takes physical tools as their organizing guide. We still call pixel strokes brush, and photoshop and many of the adobe products take analog nomenclature when applying their user interface. If you’ve ever spent time in a darkroom for photography, or sat oil painting you know this well.
So without any further explanation, here’s what you will need:
A Mac OS system
There are so many options, for the purpose of this course, but Skymachine arts recommends a Macbook Pro. They’re incredibly powerful, and since our foundational mark-making object is the Apple Pencil, it’s a seamless integration. It also mirrors the exact process I learned at SAIC (We were the first generation to require laptops, I was so poor at the time as a student that I found a refurbished copy at a computer store. If you really need assistance apple now has financing plans, and refurbished options directly on the store. I’m perfectly happy with one from a few years ago but the new ones from what I’ve heard are unbelievable.
iPAD or iPad Pro with Pencil
The combination of the Apple Pencil and an iPad, combined with a MacBook offer infinite possibilities. I can’t describe how amazing it is that you will never need new materials again after getting an iPad and Pencil.
